The Ugly Truth

"A romantically challenged morning show producer is reluctantly embroiled in a series of outrageous tests by her chauvinistic correspondent to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love. His clever ploys, however, lead to an unexpected result" - IMDB.com

A 2009 romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler.  What a movie, I think it picked up right where What Women Want and As Good As It Gets left off 10 or more years ago.  It's full of Cock this and Cock that, gorgeous twins wrestling in a pool of jello and a well sculpted doctor dude stepping out of the shower.  Gerard Butler's character Mike, though crass, arrogant and rude, still tells it like it is.  He gives us the ugly truth in short, easy to manage bits of wisdom that all men should take to heart.  He doesn't tell us how to look for love, or how to win over the right woman because they don't exist.  What he does teach us, really, is how not to get your heart broken while trying to find someone to help you not feel so all alone.  "Let him be a man!" he yells.

I can't help but notice how (inevitably) he falls in love with exactly the kind of woman he hates so much, an obnoxious, control-freak who refuses to admit when she's wrong.  They (of course) were meant for each other, his brash, unapologetic, freedom-loving, over-the-top attitude brings out the adventurous girl inside the cold, love-lorn and lonely business woman. Neither one knows why they're falling in love, and who should?

We can spout all the rules about why we need Game, and how to maintain Power in a relationship but in the end, it's all about love. The immeasurable, unpredictable bonds that tie men and women (I'm not being exclusionary) together into what can be a whirlwind of passion, love or hate, or the comfortable safety of companionship none would trade for the world, isn't something that can be packaged or explained.

Women will ask "Why do you love me?" Which I think is probably the stupidest question a woman can ask, but the answer is perfect and I agree with it completely "Fucked if I know, but I do." I sure as hell don't know why, and I'm not even going to try to explain. I'm far from the best source of advice, and in my opinion, no one can be. Why do I, a man with a serious identity crisis, abandonment issues and low self esteem love a woman who has put me down, called me every name in the book, beaten me, turned friends and family against me, abandoned me and taken my children, dignity and civil rights away?

Fucked if I know, but I do.
